Parque La Libertad
By Itzel Villagomez
During the visit to non profit organization Parque La Libertad, we learned about how this organization helps their community by providing a safe haven for the people of Desamparados, an area known for poverty and crime, by creating a space with different resources. As we took a tour around Parque La Libertad we learned about what each building provided, they ranged from Music, Sports, Technology, and much more. We also were informed that Parque La Libertad is an organization that has 30 people apart from the permanent, the rest are all volunteers, up to 700 are needed to teach the classes and run the programs they offer. These programs are especially essential for children and teenagers because it provides them with a wide range of activities and extracurriculars that can help them grow up in a better environment and keep them away from the crime of Desamparados.
After learning about Parque La Libertad we had a great opportunity to eat lunch with some of the children who are enrolled in the Parque La Libertad activities. Despite the language barrier for some people we all had a great time talking to the children and asking about their day. We also were able to participate in building/fixing one of the garden areas, specifically the garden beds. We pulled apart the old garden beds and put together the new ones by cutting wood, measuring, and everything else that goes into building. This was almost everyone's first time doing something like this so it was really fun. It was overall a really good experience, we were all happy to give back in this way.
