From Chicago to Brazil: Building Global Connections in Education

Every study abroad program has its own rhythm—new places, new people, new questions—but some groups make the experience truly exceptional. This summer, I had the privilege of leading an extraordinary group of 15 students on the UIC Education, Globalization, and the Child program to Brazil, and it was an absolutely amazing experience!

From the very first day, the group showed up engaged, energized, and endlessly curious. Whether we were in dialogue with Brazilian teachers and university faculty, exchanging stories with Brazilian youth, or exploring neighborhoods in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, they brought open minds and open hearts to everything we did. Even in the face of challenges, this group did not falter. They supported each other, looked out for each other, and faced any stumble with conviction. Each student contributed something meaningful, and together, they created a dynamic learning community that was full of joy.

Here, students will share snapshots of our journey—reflections, photos, and moments that capture our time in Brazil together. But what these posts can only begin to convey is the spirit of this group: positive, collaborative, and fully present every single day. They represented UIC with integrity and compassion, and I’m incredibly proud of the way they embraced the complexity, beauty, and challenges of international education.
