Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue

By Mya Kilgore

There are many different Costa Rican favorite dances throughout the country, but the most popular style of dance amongst Ticos and Costa Rican Locals is Salsa.  Fortunately, I was able to experience this Costa Rican charm firsthand, as my study abroad class participated in Salsa alongside other Costa Rican favorites such as the Bachata, and Merengue.

Dancing is a great form of stress release and allows for connection and community building. In Costa Rica, There is also an added element of giving back to the community through this fun past time activity. For example, there is a national talent program called “Bailando por un Sueño” or “Dancing for a Dream” which is a popular competition show that pairs a popular dance star with a person who is looking to support a charity. Our study abroad program also benefited from the charitable and hospitable disposition of the country, as our class was able to engage in trying different dances at a local college with a friendly and talented instructor.

Participating in a dance class during our program offered a glimpse of what types of entertainment Costa Rica has to offer. Although it was only a short amount of time, I experienced community and bonding with my group that only became stronger after we all were clumsily and unrhythmically shuffling around the dancefloor, and I found that it was another powerful way to reflect on our costa rican adventure and its impact and importance on our personal lives and journeys. I had an amazing time during my time abroad, and I am very grateful for the opportunity and will carry these memories with me forever.
