Fabrica de Criatividade

On the drive to VCTB, I could already tell that the part of São Paulo we were entering was different from the touristy area we were staying in. We were in Capão Redondo neighborhood. This neighborhood has a long history of gang violence that has made it hard for children to avoid gang involvement. Approaching the VCTB building, I was immediately drawn into the bright colors, interesting architecture, and beautiful mural. I think that this bright yellow color was definitely intentionally picked to help draw community members into the space. Throughout the tour of the building I continued to enjoy the unique art and plentiful outdoor space. One of the most unique parts of the building was a false refrigerator door that led to an auditorium.
The building has been dubbed “fabrica de criatividade”, creativity factory. You organization welcomes local children to come explore their musical skills, learn English, and participate in other activities. I think that the building itself really embodied a creativity factory.
Our discussion with one of the founders of VCTB, Carol, was held on the stage in the auditorium. We were each given a huge colorful beanbags to sit in. We gathered around in a large circle where we could all see each other’s faces and listen and engage with the story we were being told. The space was so comforting and welcoming. As we sat and listened to the story of VCTB, I was brought on an emotional roller coaster. I felt sad for the young children who were meant to be falcons or watchdogs for the gangs, but then joyous that they were brought into the VCTB space and given English classes and a way to spend their time that would keep them out of trouble. I was also so inspired by the founder’s individual story. She grew up in a favela in Rio. Her mom that commuted three hours to teach special-needs kids on an island and her father worked in human development. Having such selfless, giving parents created selfless, giving children that dedicated their lives to social organizations to help others. She now lives in a small rural area with farm animals and a new fiancé.
