Color & Culture in Batman Alley

By Fabiola Jimenez

Our trip to Batman Alley was full of color, culture, and shopping. We began our journey with a walk from the train station to the infamous alleyway, which is repainted every 3 months, where we were immediately faced with beautiful art and colorful houses- and coconuts! Every stand that had items to sell here was full of color as well. Through the art on the walls in Batman Alley we were able to get a glimpse of the vision an artist had in mind while creating something for people to see and gain a unique perspective of. We were able to see cultural, social, and political pieces throughout our walk of the area. We gained a new appreciation for the very touristy spot- which in my opinion is worth the visit to-and while it is a very good photo opportunity it is also a good educational one as well because each piece shares a message with the world on top of the color and detail that makes you feel.

There are so many people selling things here and although they’re all on the pricier side of souvenirs and take home items they are normally hand made or copies of original works and there are even some individuals making customized pieces for you as you purchase! This alley is rich in culture and art and is a free museum that is constantly changing some exhibits while keeping others!
