A Hike Up Arenal Volcano

Kyla Rutues

On August 9th, we did one of the three strenuous activities incorporated into our itinerary in Costa Rica: We hiked an active volcano. More specifically, the Arenal Volcano, which is a stratovolcano that has a symmetrical build made upon layers of ash, rock, and lava. The first eruption took place in 1968 and until 2010, it was Costa Rica’s most active volcano. With lots of water, bug spray, and words of encouragement, we preserved to the top. And then back to the bottom.

I didn’t really know what to expect while being on my first hike ever. After being surrounded by nature and walking across hanging bridges earlier that day, I felt ready enough for this activity. It wasn’t long after until the heat kicked in. It was very humid and everyone had different emotions while hiking the trail. I struggled the most with the temperature as I’m so used to windy weather in Chicago. I did notice many of my peers' strengths shine through while we hiked together though: positivity, encouragement, perseverance, and more. Being reminded to stay hydrated, along with helpful tips to complete the hike from experienced hikers helped us all. The view from the top was amazing!

This was such a great team building & bonding experience I’ll never forget.
