Escola Concept Sao Paulo

Today we had an amazing opportunity to visit one of São Paulo’s most expensive private schools. As Urban Education students, we focus on improving public school conditions while pushing back against the privatization of education. However, visiting this school was just as eye-opening as visiting the other schools. I noticed the quality of learning and how it was in comparison to schools in Chicago. With the amount of resources availability, Concept School students were able to rely on the school to excel them forward into the capital chain at a higher rate than public schools. I was infatuated in how the students were learning like it was engraved into every corner of that school. Walking by on our tour, students glanced at us but immediately went back into working on their projects. Our tour guide who was the head of design at the school, noted that each design throughout the school was intentional and crucial for their learning.

The outside area blew my mind. As someone who loves being outside and surrounded by trees and nature, I would’ve loved this as a kid. The fact that there was a giant tree with a play gym around it was crazy to me and reminded me of an arboretum back home that I visited a lot as a kid.

Overall, the school’s atmosphere and environment was so cool and interesting as it almost proves the point that more resources and clean, open environments are beneficial for learning. The students were focused, engaged with their teachers and felt security with receiving this form of education. As I said earlier, there are more structural issues I have with private schools and how over time, this will make it more and more difficult for a majority of students to receive quality education. The Concept School was such a cool experience and as a worker in Chicago Public Schools, I wish I had this environment and resources available for my student’s.

Here is the library with books placed across the floor of the hallways as not only a design aspect, but so students can easily access them. This is an open environment where students can feel comfortable enough to spend time here practicing their skills.
